Ultrasound-guided Radiofrequency Ablation for SI-joint pain: An observational study.

What question is this study trying to answer?

In this observational study, we investigate the effectiveness of an innovative technique, radiofrequency ablation, in targeting the nerves associated with pain in the sacroiliac joint using ultrasound guidance instead of the traditional technique of using the live x-ray (fluroscopy) guidance.

What did we learn?

Compared with traditional fluroscopy guidance, patients who underwent radiofrequency ablation in the sacroiliac joint using ultrasound guidance reported significant improvement in pain and disability that lasted 9-12 months.

Why is this relevant?

The findings of this study show that using ultrasound guidance in radiofrequency ablations of the sacroiliac joint can aid in significant pain reduction for patients undergoing this procedure as compared to performing this procedure with the traditional fluoroscopy approach. In addition, ultrasound does not involve ionizing radition, is less expensive and more available than fluoroscopy.
