FACET INJECTIONS

Facet joints are located at the back of your spine and help control how your spine moves. Like any joint in the body, facet joints can become painful when they degenerate or become injured.

If you’ve been referred to our clinic for a facet injection it is to address the pain you are feeling at this location. While we can’t change the shape or condition of your facet joint, we can inject medicine using imaging technology to a precise location with the goal of alleviating pain. If there is a question about which facet joint is causing the pain we will inject freezing   into the suspected area to see if there is a change to the pain you feel. Over the next 6 hours we ask you to note your pain in a pain diary, which will help us know when we’ve found the facet that causes your pain. We will then have you come back and inject it with medicine, usually corticosteroid, which should provide 3-6 months of relief.

While 3-6 months of relief from pain is nice, now is the time to act! By using this window of pain relief to address muscle weakness and posture issues that are major contributors of your facet pain, you will begin to offload your facet and find even more pain relief. The physiotherapists at Vivo Cura Health can help you with this effort.

How to Prepare for Your Facet Injection Procedure

For your safety, please tell us if you have:

  • any allergies to latex, freezing, or X-ray dye
  • symptoms of infection such as fever, chills or if you’re on an antibiotic

What To Expect During Your Facet Joint Injection

During the procedure, the area in and around the facet joint is injected with a mixture of a freezing and cortisone. The freezing will numb the area. The cortisone may help lower the swelling, which should reduce your pain.

The procedure takes about 15-30 minutes. You will be awake during the procedure and may ask questions at any time. Before you leave, we will give you instructions on how to care for yourself at home. Facet Joint Injections generally involve the following:

  • You will be taken to the procedure room where your physician will ask for your consent to perform the procedure.
  • You will lie on your stomach. Then the area to be injected will be cleaned with a special solution.
  • A special X-ray will be used to help view the area.
  • Your physician may numb the area with freezing. You may feel some stinging from this medicine.
  • An x-ray dye may be injected to help highlight the area on X-rays. The combined freezing and cortisone medication will be injected into your joint(s). You may feel some pressure when your physician injects the solution into the area and around your joints.

After Your Facet Injection Procedure

The freezing will wear off in about 4 hours. At that time, your usual level of pain may return until the cortisone starts working. This can take up to one week. The pain relief from the facet joint injection usually will last for several months, but this may vary from patient to patient. You may have up to 3-4 facet joint injections per year. If you have no pain relief from the facet block, the Vivo Cura Health physician will work with you to find the source of your pain and explore your treatment options. To enable your ongoing care, it’s vitally important for you to send back your pain diary following the injection.
