Social Dterminants of Health in Adults with Whiplash Associated Disorders

Lisa Jasper, Ashley Smith , April 29, 2024

What question is this study trying to answer?

The study investigates how sociodemographic features—such as age, sex, education, marital status, caregiving responsibilities, substance use, and more—relate to health outcomes (pain, disability, and physical/mental health quality of life) in adults with whiplash-associated disorders (WAD), both individually and using cluster analysis.

What did we learn?

Data from 281 participants (mean age ~40.9) revealed that education level, alcohol use, and non‑prescribed drug use were individually associated with disability. Age, marital status, and caregiving duties related to mental health quality of life. Cluster analysis identified a group characterized by being married, caregiving, employed, and older than 40—with significantly better mental health outcomes.

Why is this relevant?

This research underscores the importance of the biopsychosocial model in WAD: social factors significantly influence pain and quality of life. Recognizing these associations may help clinicians tailor interventions and resources to individual circumstances, potentially improving recovery trajectories.
