Evaluation of an Ultrasound-Assisted Longitudinal Axis Lateral Crest Approach to Radiofrequency Ablation of the Sacroiliac Joint

What question is this study trying to answer?

This study looked into an innovative, cost-friendly approach to performing radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of the sacroiliac (SI) joint as a treatment for lower back pain.

What did we learn?

The longitudinal axis SI joint RFA technique resulted in signficant improvement in pain, disability, and quality of life at both three and six month’s post-procedure. When compared to the more commonly used Palisade technique, the longitudinal axis SI joint RFA approach resulted in longer procedure time but also less fluoroscopy time, making this approach overall less expensive while enhancing the accurary of treatment for the target region.

Why is this relevant?

Chronic refractory SI joint pain is common. The longitudinal axis RFA technique is an additional treatment approach that is effective yet uses lower cost materials than other techniques.
