Effects of physical activity and sitting on health outcomes in adults with whiplash associated disorders

What question is this study trying to answer?

This study aims to understand the health outcomes of the levels of physical acitivity and sitting in adults with chronic whiplash associated disorders (WAD).

What did we learn?

Adults with WAD were divided into four categories based upon their levels of physical activity (low or moderate-to-vigourous) and daily amount of time spent sitting (greater or less than 8 hours/day). Compared to the healthy control group, sIgnificant differences were found in each category across all five health outcomes: pain intensity, pain interference, disability, physical health, and mental health. Overall, adults with WAD demonstrated lower levels of physical activity and higher levels of sitting as compared to the healthy control group.

Why is this relevant?

This research is relevant as it shows that both levels of physical activity and amount of time spent sitting directly impact health outcomes in adults with chronic WAD. Regardless of sitting times, emphasis should be placed on achieving recommended levels of moderate to vigorous levels of physical activity for favourable health outcomes.
