Cervical Facet Joint Platelet-rich Plasma in People With Chronic Whiplash-associated Disorders: A Prospective Case Series of Short-term Outcomes

What question is this study trying to answer?

This study explores the safety and effectiveness of a single injection of platelet rich plasma (PRP) as a treatment for chronically painful cervical facet joints post-motor vehicle collision.

What did we learn?

At 3 months post treatment, significant improvements in pain and disability were experienced by the majority of peopele treated and no complications were encountered.

Why is this relevant?

Chronic pain in the facet joints is common following whiplash injury and often resistant to  conventional treatments. Using a patient’s own blood plasma we can use a single platelet rich plasma injection as an effective method of treating chronic pain in the facet joints.

Key Takeaways....

Lingering facetogenic neck pain from whiplash injury can be challenging to address. PRP should be considered as a viable option.
