An evaluation of the effectiveness of platelet rich plasma epidural injections for low back pain suspected to be of disc origin – A pilot study with one-year follow-up

What question is this study trying to answer?

In this pilot study, we evaluate the effectiveness of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) epidural injections to treat chronic lower back pain suspected to of disc origin.

What did we learn?

Significant improvements in pain and disability were documented three, six, and twelve months following the PRP epidural injections. At one year post injection, most patients who required pain medication for their lower back pain were able to cut down the amount of medication they needed. Over 80% of patients were satisfied with the treatment and would recommend it to family and friends. No patient in the study experienced any complication.

Why is this relevant?

Despite being a common source of lower back pain, there are limited effective treatment options for spinal discs. As observed in this study, PRP epidural injections may present a safe, minimlly invasive and readily available treatment option.
