An Evaluation of Predictors of Response Versus Nonresponse to Intra-articular BMAC Injection for Knee Osteoarthritis

What question is this study trying to answer?

This study investigated specific features of a person’s health that could be used to predict how successful a single knee jont injection of bone marrow aspirate concentrate might be for treatment of knee osteorarthritis.

What did we learn?

A combination of three features were found to be good predictors of the sucess of a bone marrow aspirate concentrate injection: <7/10 pain intensity, previous knee surgery, and knee osteoarthritis affecting a maximum 2 out of 3 compartments of the knee.

Why is this relevant?

This simple clinical decision rule can allow clinicians to select people for a knee bone marrow aspirate concentrate injection who are likely to respond and avoid injecting people that are unlikely to respond, thus reducing waste of health care resources and saving costs
