Can a low-cost platelet-rich plasma (LC-PRP) treatment safely and effectively improve pain and function in patients with mild-to-moderate knee osteoarthritis, and is it cost-effective compared to corticosteroid injections?
LC-PRP, prepared at a low cost (~$11 per injection), yielded significant improvements in pain, function, and patient satisfaction up to 12 months post-treatment, with no significant adverse events. Additionally, LC-PRP was more cost-effective than corticosteroid injections, offering greater quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) at a lower overall cost.
Knee osteoarthritis is common and costly to manage. This study suggests LC-PRP is a promising, affordable, and safe treatment option that can improve patient outcomes while reducing healthcare costs, potentially increasing access to regenerative therapies.
