An Assessment of the Minimal Clinically Important Difference for the Pain Disability Quality-Of-Life Questionnaire-Spine

What question is this study trying to answer?

To understand if treatments for pain are working, questionnaires are often completed before and after treatment. Our team developed a questionnaire specifically for use in minimally invasive spine interventions called the Pain Disability Quality of Life Spine (PDQQ-S) questionnaire. This study evaluates the degree of change in the PDDQ-S questionnaire score that reflects a noticeable and important difference to patients undergoing lumbosacral facet (lower back) or sacroiliac joint (SI) radiofrequency neurotomy.

What did we learn?

A change in the PDDQ-S questionnaire score of 17 from pre-procedure to three months post-procedure is the minimal clinically important difference in patients undergoing lumbosacral radiofrequency neurotomy.

Why is this relevant?

Knowing the minimal clinically important difference establishes a benchmark against which the results of a pain relieving treatment can be considered successful for both clinical and research purposes.

Key Takeaways....

Asking patients to provide feedback about how a procedure has impacted them requires time and effort on their part. The PDQQ-S questionnaire is a relatively short, simple and reproducible way to extract key information from patients regarding their response to a procedure.
