Acute Clinic FAQ

Who should attend this clinic?

Patients with injuries that have occurred within the past 8 weeks such as muscle strains or sprains, ligament or cartilage damage, fractures or dislocations, tendonitis and tendon tears, concussions, or overuse injuries (such as stress fractures, shin splints, tennis elbow…etc)

How do I get into the clinic?

Wherever possible, we’d ask that you have your family doctor fax a referral to 403-351-8882. When a referral isn’t possible, you still may be able to attend the clinic. Please click the “Become a Patient of the Acute Injury Clinic” to determine if you’re eligible.

How Soon Will I Get Into the Clinic?

We aim to process all requests within 1-2 business days with the goal of having the patient seeing a Sport Medicine physician within 5-10 business days.

What can I expect when I come in?

Using the information gathered from the intake form, a doctor and allied health team member (usually an athletic therapist or physiotherapist) will work together to get a clear understanding of the nature of your injury and develop a treatment plan and address anything that they can on the spot (this may include an injection, bracing or taping…etc).

Will I need to come in again?

It really depends on the nature of your injury. Some minor injuries resolve quickly with self-care measures (rest, ice compression and elevation). If our initial evaluation reveals a straightforward diagnosis and the treatment plan is clear, then follow-up may not be required. However, if your injury is more complex we will need to see you back in order to monitor your progress and fine-tune your treatment plan as required.

Is There a Cost to Attend the Clinic?

If you are a resident of Canada, there is no cost for the assessment or any follow-up appointments. Part of your treatment plan may include recommendations such as bracing, medications and/or physical rehabilitation for an additional cost. We will review these options with you at the time of your assessment.
