A Prospective within Subject Comparison of Lumbosacral Facet Joint Radiofrequency Ablation Using a Multitined Versus Conventional Monopolar Cannula
What question is this study trying to answer?
In this study we compare the performance between the more commonly used monopolar cannula with an innovatively designed multitined Trident cannula to perform lumbar facet joint radiofrequency neurotomy
What did we learn?
This study demonstrated that the outcomes in terms of pain, disability, quality of life, adverse events, and fluoroscopy exposure time were equivalent between the two cannulae. However, radiofrequency neurotomy using the multitined Trident cannula was faster to perform, involved radiation and less local anesthetic
Why is this relevant?
As technological innovations are developed, it’s important to determine if they are an improvement over established equipment and procedures. The multitined Trident cannula was demonstrated to be non-inferior to the conventional monopolar cannula for radiofrequency neurotomy of lumbar facet joints. Study findings suggest the Trident cannula allows the procedure to be done faster, with less radiation exposure to the patient, and possibly more comfortably. The new technology is more expensive however.
