When connective tissues like ligaments and tendons become ripped or torn prolotherapy can be considered as a treatment option. In this procedure, concentrated dextrose is injected into soft tissues (tendons, bursa, ligaments and/or joints).
The dextrose causes cells to swell and disrupt, triggering the release of chemicals that stimulate healing. Prolotherapy requires multiple injections.
A common course of treatment includes weekly injections for 4-6 weeks. Prolotherapy is not covered by the public healthcare system.
