Autologous Platelet-Rich Plasma for the Treatment of Cervical Facet Joint Mediated Pain in Whiplash-Associated Disorders: A Prospective Case Series of Short-Term Outcomes

What question is this study trying to answer?

Is platelet-rich plasma (PRP) safe and effective for people with chronic whiplash injuries arising from the facet joints in the neck? Neck pain is common after whiplash and the only validated treatment, radiofrequency ablation, requires repeating each year. Alternative treaments would be beneficial for long term relief of symptoms.

What did we learn?

In a case series of 44 people, it was demonstrated that PRP (with or without the addition of physiotherapy) is a safe treatment, completely without any serious adverse events. At the group level, there were significant improvement in measures of both pain and disablity. Overall, 70% of people reported pain reduction levels of just over 50%. Similarly, 80% of people reported 45% disability reduction.

Why is this relevant?

The combination of PRP and physiotherapy is safe and effective for treatment of facet joint pain in people with chronic whiplash injuries.
