Knee osteoarthritis is a widespread health concern and unfortunately often difficult to treat with conservative care. In the Canadian healthcare system, there are long wait lists for orthopedic surgery consultation and joint replacement surgery. In this study, the focus is the potential benefits of a singular injection of bone marrow aspirate concentrate. An injection of bone marrow aspirate concentrate is a minimally invasive procedure that can control the pain of advanced osteoarthritis of the hip and/or the knee, with the potential to improve the quality of life for patients waiting for joint replacement and possibly even delaying or eliminating the need for surgery.
This study observed over 100 people with hip and/or knee osteoarthritis. It was found that one injection of bone marrow aspirate concentrate into the hip or knee joint resulted in significant decreases of pain and disability levels at three, six, and twelve months . Serious adverse events were extremely rare.
Bone marrow aspirate concentrate is safe and effective for pain reduction in hip and knee osteoarthritis and may allow people to extend the function of their knee prior to any consideration of joint surgery. Bone marrow aspirate concentrate injections could potentially reduce suffering, shorten joint replacement waitlists, and save the healthcare system money.
